According to a study by the Washington Examiner, data obtained from the Internal Revenue Service indicates that more than 1.1 million pandemic stimulus payments with a total worth of more than $1.3 billion were provided to persons who were incarcerated in various locations around the country.
According to a letter written by the IRS to Representative Don Bacon (R-NE), which the Washington Examiner was able to obtain, the number of $1.3 billion includes economic impact payments but does not include recovery rebate credits, which are another kind of COVID-19 assistance.
