In a recent commencement speech at the United States Military Academy West Point, President Joe Biden made a far-fetched claim that he had turned down an offer to play football at the U.S. Naval Academy. However, fact-checkers quickly debunked this tall tale as false. Apparently, Biden has a tendency to stretch the truth, as he has told different versions of this story to graduates at other military academies in the past.
Biden’s claim that he applied to the Naval Academy to play football is highly suspicious, considering he actually graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965. It seems unlikely that he would have simultaneously applied to the Naval Academy for football at that time.

Furthermore, Biden’s references to NFL stars from the early 1960s being on the Naval Academy football team are completely off base, as those players had already graduated when he claims to have considered attending.
During his speech at West Point, Biden continued to weave this fabricated tale, insisting that he was appointed to the Naval Academy and then decided to decline the offer due to the presence of notable football players on the team. This narrative has been debunked multiple times, with no evidence to support Biden’s claims.
Interestingly, Biden’s penchant for spinning elaborate stories extends beyond this football anecdote. He has also made dubious claims about driving an 18-wheeler, getting arrested during the civil rights movement and being the first in his family to attend college. It appears that embellishing his past is a recurring theme for the President.
Despite Biden’s attempts to impress the West Point graduates with his fictional football saga, it’s clear that the truth doesn’t always align with his storytelling. Perhaps he should stick to the facts rather than spinning tales of gridiron glory that never actually happened.
