The FBI’s New York Field Office just witnessed another episode of belt-tightening, and not in a way that should inspire any confidence in the bureau’s transparency. James Dennehy, the man who recently found himself in hot water for defending the integrity of his team, was pushed out faster than a liberal at a conservative rally. Just a month ago, he had a little showdown of sorts with officials from the administration, urging his employees to stand their ground against the increasingly partisan demands to unveil the identities of agents involved in the January 6 investigations. Guess who ended up on the chopping block?
Dennehy received the dreaded order to submit his resignation papers quicker than most people can say, “deep state.” Reports indicate that he was officially ordered to resign on a Friday, likely in a bid to get him out before he had the weekend to think about how ludicrous the whole situation was. The FBI, presumably too embarrassed to comment on what prompted this sudden maneuver, has remained tight-lipped about Dennehy’s abrupt departure, leaving a lot to be inferred about their priorities.
In an email sent to FBI personnel, the newly ex-assistant director in charge didn’t exactly mince words about his forced early retirement. Apparently, he felt as though he was being ushered out without a clear reason—no “thank you for your service” or even a “goodbye.” Just a swift kick in the pants, which surely resonates with anyone familiar with government bureaucracies that seem more interested in serving up political favors than actual justice.

Dennehy’s message to his team back then strongly urged them not to comply with requests from Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, who was pressing for a list of names of agents involved in what some perceive to be a politically motivated witch hunt. It seems he had enough gumption to stand up and declare that the FBI was turning into a battlefield where good people are shown the door simply for adhering to the law.
It gets even juicier. The word around the water cooler is that Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll might be next on the chopping block, as he also declined to comply with Bove’s questionable orders. The FBI’s priorities seem almost cartoonish at this point, as they prioritize a politically driven agenda over the principles they were supposed to uphold. One can only wonder how many more agents will have to take a forced retirement before a line is drawn in the sand, and a true reckoning is forced upon an agency increasingly seen as a political pawn instead of a guardian of justice.
