The FBI has once again stumbled into the realm of farce after suggesting that a man who aimed to take out Donald Trump had a motive aligned with extreme right-wing ideologies. Little did they know that the owner of Gab, a social media platform known for its free speech stance, was ready to blow the lid off this flimsy narrative. According to Andrew Torba, the alleged shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks was anything but a conservative; in fact, he was “unequivocally pro-Biden,” an inconvenient detail for the FBI’s storyline.
During a recent congressional hearing, the FBI’s deputy director Paul Abbate paraded around the idea that Crooks had posted “anti-immigrant” and “anti-Semitic” content online. This was further complicated by Abbate’s insistence that the true motive of the shooter was still shrouded in mystery, a statement that could only earn a collective eye roll from anyone with a working brain. He claimed the agency sifted through an impressive 700 posts from the suspect’s online account during the fateful years of 2019 and 2020, trying to paint a picture that would stick. Of course, this only happened to be when Crooks was a mere teenager, begging the question of how much credence one should give to a 14-year-old’s social media ramblings when we’re talking about violent, premeditated aggression.

As if things couldn’t get more absurd, Torba quickly swooped in and pointed out that the FBI’s narrative didn’t match the actual facts surrounding Crooks’ digital presence. The agency’s so-called intelligence was based on a “social media account” that they believed belonged to the shooter, but based on their own request for information, this account posted content supportive of Biden and even favored COVID-19 lockdowns and immigration. So much for the FBI’s alleged expertise in connecting dots.
At the hearing, the plot thickened even further when Senator Marsha Blackburn decided to put Abbate on the hot seat regarding the Gab account. In a moment that could rival a sitcom’s punchline, Abbate had to concede that the shooter had shared leftist views on Gab more recently, contradicting the earlier claims of an “extreme right-wing” persona. It’s a shocking revelation, truly, though probably not as shocking as discovering that politicians will say just about anything to fit their agenda.
Trump himself even weighed in on the debacle, suggesting Democrats might bear some responsibility for inciting the attack by labeling him a “threat to democracy.” It’s an intriguing proposition that raises eyebrows and challenges the narratives that those on the left cling stubbornly to. In a world where the left’s penchant for spinning tales in favor of their political narrative runs unchecked, the FBI seems to be the unwitting star of this tragicomedy, caught in its own web of lies and misdirection when it comes to a supposed right-wing menace.
