In South Florida, law enforcement and federal agencies have intercepted multiple smuggling operations, including the Coast Guard’s interdiction of nearly three dozen migrants near Miami and Coral Gables police uncovering 26 Chinese nationals crammed into vans. These events underscore the state’s role as a key entry point for illegal migration and the determination of smugglers to exploit Florida’s coastlines.
Governor Ron DeSantis has taken a hardline approach to combat this surge in smuggling, recently signing sweeping immigration laws that make illegal entry into Florida a state crime. These measures enhance penalties for undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes and mandate cooperation between local law enforcement and federal agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
