In the tiring arena of politics, embellishment and dodging responsibility seem like skills of necessity, more than virtue, especially when it centers around the age-old topic of presidential fitness. What people are witnessing is the comedy show of political theater, with actors dancing around some real concerns about leadership. Perhaps the spotlight needs to turn toward the parade of fumbling excuses coming from some quarters as they defend their leader’s awareness and leadership abilities. It appears their primary task is to reassure the public, amused or not, that it’s business as usual at the White House.
The issue at hand is how a president at the age of eighty managed the whirlwind schedule of international travel and high-stakes debates. Was this itinerary set to showcase vitality, or is it merely overshadowing a more significant issue of capability? Questions churn about the president’s competence, not without reason. While some staunch defenders claim that he never missed a beat in private, the public performance seems to tell a different tale. It’s tough to buy into the narrative of constant alertness when public displays are so easily dissected on live television.
Nevertheless, the artful blaming of White House staff for these lapses adds another comedic layer to the mix. If one has to perform the presidential duties with clarity, maybe it’s wise to start by surrounding oneself with competent advisors. But here we are, watching the blame game unravel, where staff is scapegoated for what appears to be the president’s lapses in engagement and coherence. It’s like a never-ending episode of a drama where the villains are anonymous insiders holding secret grudges.
Adding insult to injury is the peculiar defense put forth by some about another historical figure, a past president himself. He refrains from criticizing his peers, claiming ignorance as some form of defense. This club of former leaders doesn’t make the public’s job of holding leaders accountable any easier. Watching them tiptoe around criticism and challenging their fragile unity feels like witnessing a grand old opera with too much melody and not enough substance. It’s as if decorum must outweigh the duty to speak truths, no matter how glaring they might be.
However, the real biting humor lies in the tales of press secretaries who appear to dodge the real issues as if they were navigational hazards. When succinct answers to the president’s policies are reduced to flipping through notebooks, one wonders where substance has disappeared in political discourse. Some staffers spend more time pampering these performers instead of tackling matters that matter. But, alas, we are served the same lukewarm narratives and expected to applaud the performance. In the end, the audience deserves a merit badge for enduring this spectacular drama.
