Instead of addressing the real needs of our citizens, like supporting veterans, strengthening law enforcement, or securing our communities, Democratic politicians are tripping over themselves to defend Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national deported after allegations of MS-13 gang affiliation. While the Trump administration has made clear its commitment to keeping America safe, Democrats seem more interested in grandstanding over the fate of a non-citizen with a checkered past than protecting the interests of law-abiding Americans.
Let’s be clear: Kilmar Abrego Garcia entered the United States illegally and was subject to a 2019 deportation order after two judges found probable connections to MS-13, one of the world’s most violent criminal organizations. Despite these findings, Garcia remained in Maryland until a recent crackdown led to his removal—an action the administration admits was, in part, an “administrative error.” Yet, even with this admission, the Trump team stands firm that Garcia’s gang ties make him ineligible to return. Meanwhile, Democrats are flying overseas, holding press conferences, and rallying in the streets, all to demand the return of a man whose very presence in the country was deemed a threat by multiple officials.
The priorities on display are astonishing. While American families mourn victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants, and while our border remains under siege, left-wing activists and lawmakers are pouring their energy into protests and foreign junkets to advocate for Garcia. Thousands have taken to the streets—not to support police officers, not to demand safer neighborhoods, but to clamor for the rights of someone accused of gang activity. Congressman Jeff Van Drew and other commonsense leaders are right to question why taxpayer dollars are being squandered on these political stunts instead of being invested in the real needs of American communities.

On one side, Republicans and the Trump administration are focused on restoring law and order, respecting court decisions that protect Americans, and prioritizing the safety of our citizens. It’s time to refocus our national conversation on empowering productive, law-abiding citizens and addressing the issues that matter most to middle America.
