The Constitution is crystal clear on the federal government’s role in handling illegal immigration, and it is the duty of the United States to protect each state against invasion. Unfortunately, the Biden administration and their cohorts in Congress seem unwilling to protect American citizens from the influx of illegal immigrants and criminal cartels at our southern border. Their preferred method of defense seems to be empty words, while voters in border states are left to deal with the devastating consequences of this border crisis.
But now, Texas counties are taking matters into their own hands. Fifty counties have declared the border crisis an “invasion,” including the most recent additions of Bandera, Schleicher, and Uvalde counties. These declarations are not made lightly, as they invoke both Article IV of the U.S. Constitution and Article IV, Section 7 of the Texas Constitution. Under the Texas Constitution, the governor has the power to command the state’s military forces to suppress insurrection and repel invasions.

It’s quite interesting to see how passionately the left embraces the idea of suppressing “insurrection,” but only when it involves former President Donald Trump and the events of January 6, 2021. When it comes to illegal immigrants, who have committed a crime simply by entering the United States, the left seems perfectly content to turn a blind eye.
However, Texas officials disagree. They argue that this invasion is unsustainable and poses a serious threat to the lives of their citizens. Almost 20% of Texas counties have now declared the border crisis in their state an “invasion,” which speaks volumes about the severity of the situation. The Biden administration’s disastrous policies have led to an estimated 10 million illegal entries into the country since 2021, with an unprecedented 1.9 million illegal immigrants entering Texas alone in fiscal 2023.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration is doing everything except actually address the ongoing invasion. Rather than convince Texas voters that they can rely on Washington to protect their borders, the administration is busy challenging Texas laws that allow law enforcement officials to arrest and deport illegal immigrants. They argue that Texas cannot run its own immigration system, pointing to their exclusive authority to regulate the entry and removal of noncitizens.
Furthermore, the Biden administration has also taken issue with Texas’ border barrier, claiming that it hinders Border Patrol agents’ ability to arrest and detain illegal immigrants. Apparently, the Biden administration would prefer that the border be a free for all, with illegal immigrants crossing over and being caught, released, and mostly forgotten about for years to come.
In the midst of all this, the administration is urging Republicans to forget about enforcing immigration law and instead pass an amnesty package. They seem to believe that this is the solution to border security, despite the fact that it has already been shot down by Congress. The White House press secretary even had the audacity to suggest that Republicans should embrace this suicidal plan or face the possibility of a government shutdown. A government shutdown that would be blamed on the GOP, of course.
It’s clear that Democrats and the White House have abandoned their responsibility to protect our borders and guarantee a Republican form of government to every state. Thankfully, Texas officials have stepped up to take on this duty, but Washington is fighting them every step of the way. It remains to be seen what practical effect these county declarations will have, but when almost one-fifth of Texas counties are calling the border crisis an invasion, it’s time for the inside-the-Beltway crowd to start listening.
