The political drama has heated up once more, and this time, it’s the former President Obama administration that’s in the spotlight. Looks like Tulsi Gabbard, the current Director of National Intelligence (DNI), has taken it upon herself to do some serious digging. In what could easily spark a new political thriller, she’s doubled down on her claims about the Obama administration allegedly politicizing intelligence in a bid to taint then-candidate Donald Trump. Gabbard even dropped a fresh batch of documents accusing President Obama and his top aides of cooking up intelligence assessments for the Russia Gate investigation. She’s sent these documents over to the Department of Justice (DOJ), almost like she’s handing them a spicy mystery novel and asking them to see what’s criminal about it.
Supporters of Obama dismiss these claims as yet another ludicrous attempt to distract from more pressing matters. They argue the new old document—with its oh-so-convenient timing—was a report from 2017. This document challenges the widely accepted narrative that Putin preferred Trump over Clinton in the infamous 2016 election. But then again, this is politics, a world where everyone seems to have their version of events. One part of the report alleges that the Russians were all set to run wild with some unverified information on Clinton, should she have won. According to this report, her supposed fits of anger and need for tranquilizers make for quite the tabloid sensation. Of course, a longtime aide of Clinton was quick to call these claims ridiculous.
Back at the ranch, or rather, in the nation’s capital, the Democrats are shrugging this off as an annoying distraction. They’re probably rolling their eyes back faster than a caffeinated owl at these latest revelations. It’s easy to see why: Brian, another pundit, hinted that everything was fine and dandy until a certain meeting happened on December 9. That’s the day everything supposedly changed, and the narrative was born that Trump had a fan club in the Kremlin. Now, thanks to those claims, Trump had to endure two and a half years of what his supporters consider nonsense, wondering if he was part of some Russian figure skating team. Finally, it’s time for America’s favorite department, the DOJ, to see if there’s any legal meat on these bones.
There’s some skepticism in the air over whether any concrete criminal charges will materialize from this, given the government’s track record with so-called scandalous revelations. There are whispers about Obama possibly being complicit in one of the biggest political tricks in modern U.S. history, though many just see it as a staple political prank, not necessarily a prosecutable affair. The right question continues to be whether this political maneuvering was a big bad pretext used to investigate Trump, supposedly rendering him an ineffective president, at least in the eyes of some commentators.
Despite all the hype, there seems to be this pessimistic air that justice might never be served. Even though Gabbard says she has the evidence, experts like Andy McCarthy suggest that implicating Obama in a crime will be a long shot. Maybe it’s a setup for another round of hearings that ends with a dramatic reading of a report, but nothing more. In the convoluted reality of U.S. politics, this whole affair might end up as just another chapter in a very long book.
