Hillary Clinton Criticizes Democratic Response to Roe v. Wade Overturn

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently spoke out about the Democratic party’s response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, expressing criticism of their lack of preparedness. In an interview for the upcoming book “The Fall of Roe: The Rise of a New America,” Clinton stated that Democrats underestimated the threat to abortion rights and were in denial about the strength of Roe v. Wade.

Clinton mentioned the party’s trust in the courts and legal precedent, pointing out that they failed to recognize the anti-abortion movement’s persistence in chipping away at abortion rights. She acknowledged the relentless nature of anti-abortion groups and emphasized the lack of a comparable level of organization and funding on the Democratic side.

Additionally, Clinton discussed her view that the Democratic Party was complacent in the overturning of Roe v. Wade and stated that if she had been in the Senate at the time, she would have fought to block the confirmations of Trump-appointed justices. She also attributed her loss in the 2016 election to women voters who abandoned her, citing the perception of not being “perfect.”

In light of Clinton’s comments, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota echoed her sentiments, acknowledging that the party may not have fully grasped the impending threat to abortion rights. He reflected on his own experience running in a conservative district and being supportive of abortion rights, noting that this position was considered risky within the party at the time.

Clinton’s warning about the 2024 election being “existential” and the potential implications of another win by former President Donald Trump also raised concerns about the future of women’s rights. These remarks have sparked discussions within the Democratic party about their approach to addressing and defending against threats to abortion rights.
