In the latest saga from the disappointing chronicles of congressional misbehavior, three Democratic members of the House have found themselves facing Congressional discipline. Why, you ask? Well, it seems they thought it was a good idea to scuffle with federal law enforcement at an ICE detention center in New Jersey. Because, naturally, they wanted to exemplify law-abiding behavior to the young folks by practically clashing with the law.
The footage from the incident has been reviewed, and even the House Speaker, Mike Johnson, who also happens to be a former practicing attorney, suggested that what occurred looked suspiciously like battery. Remember, these are individuals elected to uphold the law. Instead, they decided to play a part in a rather undignified reality TV episode. As if Congress doesn’t already have its hands full dealing with the nation’s business.
Jeff Van Drew, a Republican Congressman from New Jersey serving on the House Judiciary Committee, expressed his dismay at his colleagues’ actions. He pointed out that members of Congress should be exemplary role models, the purveyors of the rule of law. Yet, here they are behaving in a way that sends mixed signals to the public about what it means to be a responsible leader. The trio might have skipped that page in the Congressional handbook.
Nancy Pelosi, never one to miss an opportunity to throw shade at Republicans, speculated that the GOP might have had a hand in orchestrating the incident to influence upcoming elections in New Jersey. Because, of course, it’s always the Republicans’ fault, right? Perhaps they also arranged for the rain last week. It seems Republicans are remarkably talented at slinging misdeeds without even being present.
To add to the spectacle, Hakeem Jeffries, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, was asked about possible sanctions for the misbehaving members. He provided an answer that was about as clear as mud. Something about a “red line.” One can only assume that he’s left it to the imagination what actions might be taken. Perhaps they are preparing to run an episode of Congress’s Got Talent featuring such red-line crossing.
At the end of the day, what remains crucial is accountability. As Congressman Van Drew aptly put it, members of Congress should be held to the same standards as any ordinary citizen. When lawbreakers should have their day in court, so should these legislators-in-question. America awaits the enlightening hearing chaired by Van Drew with bated breath, hoping for a cleansing dose of transparency. Or maybe just more of the same political theater that makes one wonder why everyone involved isn’t holding a popcorn and a soda.
