House Judiciary GOP Demands Answers on FBI Mar-a-Lago Raid, Threatens Subpoena

House Judiciary Committee Republicans are pushing for information regarding the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago that happened in August 2022. Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, asking for answers and threatening a subpoena if they are not provided. The letter also mentions concerns from former Assistant Director Steven D’Antuono about the FBI’s and Justice Department’s handling of the raid. The committee had previously sought additional information from the FBI, but the response did not provide the requested documents.

The letter refers to an order from Judge Aileen Cannon, overseeing Special Counsel Jack Smith’s case against former President Donald Trump, to publicly docket previously undocketed court filings. Jordan’s letter outlines specific information being sought, including documents and communications related to meetings before the search warrant on President Trump’s private residence, as well as those involving FBI and Justice Department officials involved in the execution of the search warrant.

If the DOJ does not respond by June 12, the letter warns of potential compulsory measures to obtain compliance with the requests. The FBI raid is back in the news following revelations about the authorization of “deadly force” in the raid and Special Counsel Jack Smith’s request for a gag order. Additionally, Attorney General Garland is set to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on June 4, when the raid is likely to be a topic of discussion if the requested information has not been provided.
