House Oversight Subpoenas Secret Service Over Attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania

Wednesday showcased yet another jaw-dropping moment in the drama that is America’s politics, and this time, it’s nothing short of an action-packed thriller. The House Oversight Committee’s James Comer (R-KY) officially sent a subpoena to U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle after an attempted assassination on Donald Trump during his rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania. Unsurprisingly, questions are cropping up like dandelions in spring, alongside a pile of damning security reports.

Comer’s accompanying letter didn’t pull any punches. He highlighted the jaw-dropping incompetence of the Secret Service during the incident, pointing out that their main mission is to protect U.S. leaders and other major events. Surely, not much protecting happened when a would-be assassin took a shot at the former, and potentially future, president.

The oversight hawk wasn’t messing around, mentioning that despite letting Cheatle yap to the media, neither the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) nor the Secret Service have provided enough clarity about Cheatle’s appearance at the committee’s upcoming hearing. This lack of transparency is like adding jet fuel to the already blazing fire of skepticism surrounding the agency’s capabilities.

And, wouldn’t you know it, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is desperately trying to keep Cheatle from testifying, even launching an investigation to throw more smokescreen into the mix. Comer had tried to get Cheatle to voluntarily testify, but of course, DHS had to intervene, leaving the committee in the dark. The letter makes it clear: lack of transparency equals no confidence in Cheatle’s ability to lead the Secret Service.

Speaking of incompetence, officials provided details on what went down with the wannabe assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks. Law enforcement interacted with him before the attack, and bystanders pointed out that he was lurking on a suspicious rooftop—a known vulnerability. And wouldn’t you know, Cheatle quipped that it was too perilous to place snipers on the roof, citing a slope. Yep, slopes are apparently more terrifying than protecting a national leader.

First Lady Jill Biden seemingly had her fingerprints on Cheatle’s appointment, and, shocker, she’s taken zero accountability. Mayorkas is on board with the Keystone Cops routine, fully backing the Secret Service. To make matters worse, President Joe Biden doesn’t even seem to recognize that his director is a woman. What a circus.

In the meantime, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has assembled a “special task force” to sniff out those “serious security lapses.” He told The Daily Signal that he’s all in for seeing Cheatle wave goodbye to her position. So here we are, it’s been five days since someone took a potshot at Trump, and we’re left with nothing but comedy material and a Secret Service that’s afraid of slopes. America deserves some answers, not more excuses.
