Hugh Hewitt Claims NYC Leadership Driving City to Ruin

Ah, New York City, the land of dreams, bright lights, and a budding experiment in socialism, if mayoral candidate Zohra Mamdani has his way. His bold, or dare we say, bewildering proposal introduces government-run grocery stores which, naturally, would operate without the hassle of paying rent or taxes. Instead, they’d be funded by steep hikes in corporate taxes and extra nibbles from the pockets of high-income earners. As you can imagine, current grocers are about as thrilled as a cat at a water aerobics class.

Now, Mamdani’s idea is supposed to address the rising food costs that are squeezing New Yorkers tighter than Spanx on a Thanksgiving belly. Prices are up by a hefty 25% since 2019, which supporters say justifies the need for such radical measures. However, the grocery store owners argue that their profits aren’t the problem. With profit margins at a slim 1.6% in 2023, they’re not exactly making Scrooge McDuck money. Instead, they suggest enforcing antitrust laws to increase competition and improve the food market ecosystem sustainably. That sounds positively sensible, doesn’t it?

Oh, but it doesn’t stop there with Mamdani. He’s also known for his views on defunding the police, with grand visions of turning the NYPD into a squad of social workers. One can only imagine what this would do to the already delicate crime situation in a bustling metropolis like New York. Grocers and shoppers already face threats, with crime prompting increased spending on security just to keep apples from walking off without paying the bill. It’s hard to imagine how a government-run store, especially with less traditional security, could handle the city’s notorious pickpockets and shoplifters.

Despite the enthusiastic buzzing from Mamdani’s young and energetic supporters’ camp, he doesn’t seem to have the backing of his own party’s bigwigs. Some New York Democrats sound more like disgruntled sports fans complaining about a perpetually losing team. They argue Mamdani’s campaign rests on unachievable promises and threatens to burden New York with higher taxes – the very last thing the city needs. Suddenly, a ticket straight to Miami’s more tax-friendly environment feels quite tempting.

In this increasingly zany political theatre, it’s clear that for New Yorkers, the stakes are high, just like their taxes could be under Mamdani’s reign. Meanwhile, on a more practical note, considering the price of groceries and taxes are on the rise faster than a Broadway show’s opening weekend, one would think the majestic city’s future deserves more measured and less extreme policies. With leaders like Mamdani, the idea that some are looking nostalgically back to the “bad old days” might not be so far-fetched. It’s one peculiar political potluck – bring your own cutlery!
