In a country bursting with contradictions, it’s always a refreshing spectacle when federal forces remind Californian sanctuary enthusiasts that the rule of law is not selective. Recently, a team from Border Patrol has done a splendid job causing quite a stir about an hour north of Alcatraz’s famed walls. Arriving in the state capital, these agents brought a sense of order to a place that has tried so hard to ignore the rules. When Border Patrol pays a visit to this proudly sanctuary-hugging state, it’s clear they’re about to dispel the notion that California is invincible to the law.
In an operation filled with drama reminiscent of a high-stakes action movie, agents zeroed in on a local Home Depot. The sight of federal badges must not have been on many illegal immigrants’ shopping lists that day, because upon arrival, individuals scattered like pigeons at a city park. Imagine the chaos as folks sprinted in all directions, while agents pursued and successfully rounded up ten individuals. Among them, they identified an aggravated felon who had a bit of a fondness for fentanyl trafficking, as if being an illegal immigrant wasn’t quite adventurous enough.
The excitement didn’t stop there. One bold U.S. citizen decided to join in the chaos by charmingly resorting to tire-slashing. Unfortunately for him, slashing tires was the gateway to a front-row wrestling match with the agents. The end result was a classic case of crime not paying, as the tire-slasher ended up with a face full of mace and a one-way ticket to the back of a patrol car. His wife, shouting her grievances at the agents, seemed to forget that citizenship doesn’t come with a free pass for vandalism.
Border Patrol’s operation in Sacramento seems to have ruffled quite a few local feathers. In denial of their sanctuary status, Sacramento was reminded that no matter how much they clamor for a lawless utopia, federal presence does not discriminate. The Border Patrol Chief summed it up nicely, reinforcing the message that Sacramento, and California at large, should not expect any under-the-wire immunity. When it comes to enforcing national laws, they’re not about to check the “only within acceptable limits” box.
Of course, California’s Governor Gavin Newsom’s office didn’t miss the opportunity to spin the narrative, suggesting the chaos unleashed was tantamount to unjust racial profiling. Their response was as predictable as a soap opera plot twist and aimed to deflect from the reality of handling illegal immigration. But regardless of how much campaign-style rhetoric is hurled their way, the fact remains: the border agents are not in the business of making friends but of safeguarding the nation. And for that, a little chaos in a sanctuary oasis might just be the wake-up call needed.
