A former FBI informant and master of deception, Alexander Smirnov, recently received a six-year vacation in the slammer for attempting to stir the pot of political chaos with a fabricated story about President Biden and his son, Hunter. Smirnov, who wore two hats as a dual U.S. and Israeli citizen, had an audacious streak of creativity that would have made even the most seasoned fiction writers envious. His tale alleged that Ukrainian energy company Burisma had gifted both Bidens a princely sum of $5 million each back in 2015.
Of course, the timing couldn’t have been more convenient. Smirnov sprung his whopper on the public during the heated 2020 presidential race after he revealed a palpable “bias” against Biden, cementing his reputation as not just a garden-variety informant, but one with a flair for the dramatic. Only trouble was, investigators later found that Smirnov’s actual dealings with Burisma were utterly mundane, beginning two years after his posited bribery bonanza. It’s a classic case of trying to twist reality into a narrative that suited his imaginary agenda.

This grand fabrication spiraled into a firestorm in Congress when it resurfaced as a key element of the House impeachment inquiry against the current Democratic president. Naturally, the Biden administration dismissed the inquiry as a lowbrow stunt designed to distract from more pressing matters—like ignoring the border crisis and economic instability. Good luck convincing anyone that the same administration that can’t keep their story straight can even handle a credible impeachment inquiry.
During the court proceedings, Smirnov’s attorneys suggested his lengthy tenure as an informant might earn him sympathy—citing health issues and his supposed “substantial assistance” to the government. As if that’s supposed to make anyone feel sorry for a man who tried to meddle in a presidential election. One can’t help but ponder whether the same leniency would have been shown had Smirnov, a conservative, made the same missteps. Spoiler: certainly not.
Meanwhile, Hunter Biden, the apple of President Biden’s eye, manages to sidestep serious consequences for his own legal issues, including tax evasion and firearms charges. One has to marvel at the family privileges at play here. Smirnov’s legal team pointed out that both Hunter and a certain former president facing other charges have seemingly emerged unscathed. The twin realities of political favoritism and the two-tiered justice system are on full display, leading many to wonder how much longer the average American is expected to play by the rules when the elite clearly don’t.
