Iran Digs In After Kharg Island Strikes

As springtime peeks its head around the corner, nature appears to have other plans. A blizzard warning has been issued from the northern Rockies stretching all the way to the upper Midwest. The howling wind, clocking in at about 50 miles per hour, is promising a treacherous travel ordeal for anyone daring enough to venture out. Just as everyone’s gearing up for what should be blue skies and the wearing of green on St. Patrick’s Day, much of the deep South is set to experience the record-breaking cold. It seems Mother Nature is playing the ultimate prank this year.

In Cuba, tensions are running high as anti-government protesters have taken matters into their own hands. The discontent stems from frequent power cuts and food shortages, leading to an attack on a Communist Party office. The situation is only made worse by a significant drop in oil shipments, all thanks to the U.S. actions against Venezuela. As history has shown, when the people become desperate, they rise up with an intensity that the powers that be likely underestimated.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, North Korea is providing a grandiose show of force. Kim Jong-un, alongside his teenage daughter, took to the field to watch a live firing test of a rocket launch system. South Korea’s military detected roughly ten ballistic missiles being flexed in front of the world as if it were a competitive fireworks display. Clearly, spring is not just about new beginnings but also about old tensions flaring up for the spectacle of all.

In the Middle East, U.S. and Israeli airstrikes are shaking the ground in Western Iran. Israel continues its aggressive campaign against the regime’s infrastructure. It’s a tough love approach, pursuing security through relentless attacks intended to curb Iranian mischievousness. Iran, undaunted, engages in provincial terrorism targeting Israel and Gulf countries, all while the skies are lit with sirens warning central Israel of incoming missile barrages. It’s almost as if they’re participating in a gloomy game of geopolitical chess.

To round out this whirlwind of global unrest, everyone should keep an eye on the Persian Gulf where the U.S. has launched strikes against Iran’s vital Car Island. This locale being the bottleneck for nearly all Iranian oil shipments could spell trouble if taken offline. Not to mention, China might break into a sweat, given its considerable reliance on Iranian oil. The shipping lanes of the Strait of Hormuz are standing in the crosshairs, and everyone knows that a disruption there sends ripples far wider than the Gulf. Let’s hope cooler heads prevail, though that seems as likely as a warm St. Patrick’s Day this year.
