The Israeli military is pointing fingers at a fire that erupted following an airstrike that took the lives of numerous Palestinian civilians, claiming it was the cause of the deaths. The airstrike, which resulted in the deaths of at least 45 people and nearly 250 injuries, was targeted at two Hamas leaders, identified as Yassin Rabia and Khaled Nagar, who were described as “Hamas senior commanders” by Israel Defense Forces spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.
Hagari stated that despite efforts to minimize civilian casualties, an unexpected and unintended fire broke out, leading to devastating consequences. The military is investigating the cause of the fire, stressing that the munitions used for the strike could not have ignited a fire of such magnitude.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the strike as a “tragic mistake,” conveying the sentiment of Israeli leadership. Despite this, Israel has faced criticism from international leaders, including politicians in the United States, who condemned the strike and warned of the potential consequences if Israel does not take adequate measures to protect Palestinian civilians.
President Joe Biden’s administration has expressed the necessity for Israel to exercise caution in its military operations, emphasizing the protection of civilians. However, the Israeli military has underscored the ongoing threat posed by Hamas in the region and has continued its operations in Rafah.
The Israeli strike and subsequent fire that resulted in the deaths of Palestinian civilians have exacerbated Israel’s international standing, especially in the wake of recent rulings from the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. These developments have further isolated and cast a shadow on the country’s actions during the war.
Israel continues to face scrutiny and backlash for its military operations in Rafah, which have not only resulted in civilian casualties but also generated increased international condemnation and legal implications.
