U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin, a prominent figure on the far-left within the Democratic Party, is doubling down on his efforts to play the political victim. In a bizarre twist of events, Raskin is targeting President Trump for using the nickname “Pocahontas” for Senator Elizabeth Warren during a recent address to Congress. While one would think a major political figure would have bigger fish to fry, it appears Raskin finds Trump’s light-hearted jab a more pressing issue than the anarchy so often associated with his own party.
This nickname is nothing new; Trump has been throwing shade at Warren for her fabrications regarding her Native American heritage for years. Let’s not forget that Warren once fancied herself a woman of the tribe, only for her claims to be shredded in the glare of a DNA test that revealed a startlingly tall tale. In a last-ditch attempt to save face, Warren even issued an apology to the Cherokee Nation in 2019. Nevertheless, the whispers about her leveraging her dubious ancestry remain deafening. During her time at Harvard Law School, she was hilariously listed as a Native American on federal affirmative action forms, but the university expertly sidestepped any responsibility.
Now, instead of acknowledging Warren’s sustained attempts to bolster her career through tall tales, Raskin insists on framing Trump as the problem. Apparently, in Raskin’s mind, mocking someone who has exploited their identity for personal gain is far worse than the actual exploitation itself. Despite numerous Native Americans reportedly finding humor in Trump’s remark, Raskin has determined that this lighthearted jab qualifies as a racial slur worthy of censure.
The narrative takes an even more comical turn when it becomes apparent that Raskin is fixated on his colleagues’ chaotic behaviors during the address. Instead of pointing fingers at their walkouts or their embarrassing anti-Trump signage, Raskin opts to make the whole episode about Trump’s supposed inability to handle tension. He even claimed that Al Green—an obvious focal point of embarrassment for Democrats—contributed a “strong, valid, substantive” point during the address. In Raskin’s fantasy land, perhaps “strong” means disrespectful outbursts and grandstanding.
In Raskin’s universe, if the chamber were to issue a censure, it should be Trump for the “insurrection” he supposedly incited. He spins the entire story as a testament to his party’s commitment to dignity, decorum, and integrity—three qualities the Democrats could use a refresher course on. While Raskin believes that Trump’s use of “Pocahontas” sullies the halls of Congress, one can’t help but question where Raskin was when actual American citizens faced violence in the streets fueled by his party’s rhetoric.
So, as Raskin continues his crusade against Trump using humorous yet outdated nicknames, one thing is crystal clear: Democrats would rather feign outrage over clever wordplay than confront the very real issues that their party is fostering. If irony had a leading actor, Raskin would undoubtedly be receiving an Academy Award for his melodramatic performances on the political stage.
