During a campaign stop in Pennsylvania, Vice President Kamala Harris showcased her flair for oratory—albeit not the kind that anyone would hope to hear from a national leader. While attempting to articulate the essence of the upcoming 2024 presidential election and America’s role as a beacon of democracy, Harris delivered a perplexing jumble of phrases, much to the bemusement of her audience. It seemed she was aiming for a profound message about democracy, but ended up serving what can only be described as a deliciously confusing word salad.
In her speech, Harris emphasized the significance of the United States in the global arena, remarking on the dual nature of democracy. However, her words turned into a linguistic rollercoaster with dramatic twists that left listeners scratching their heads. She spoke about “incredible strength” and “incredibly fragile” aspects of democracy, raising questions about whether her message was intended to inspire or simply provide comic relief. One would hope that a vice president could tackle such an important subject with clarity, but Harris took the scenic route instead.

Social media didn’t miss a beat. Conservative commentator Greg Price pointed out Harris’s verbal gymnastics on X, cheekily remarking that “Kamala word salads are so back.” The online community quickly jumped in with their own interpretations of what Harris might have meant—or if she even knew herself. Who could have imagined that a duality of democracy would sound like a culinary mishmash that would make any chef blush?
This is not the first time Harris has made headlines for her verbal mishaps. Back in March 2022, she delivered a memorable performance in Louisiana where she waxed poetic about “the significance of the passage of time.” Apparently, time is significant, but trying to explain that significance in a clear manner must have been a challenge. Whether it was discussing NATO or engaging in discussions with Russia, Harris has consistently left a trail of bewildered expressions in her wake. Her knack for convoluted explanations should be studied in communication courses everywhere—except they may want to use her speeches as examples of what not to do.
As Harris continues to make the rounds on the campaign trail, one has to wonder how many more of these impressive verbal misfires she will deliver. While she attempts to embody the principles of democracy and diplomacy, perhaps she should first invest in a solid communication coach. After all, the stakes are high, and her role demands more than just a spirited delivery of a perplexing narrative. It might be time for her to tighten up her speech rather than loosen the linguistic leash.
