Kamala Harris Interview a Masterclass in Rambling and Contradictions

Vice President Kamala Harris recently had her first solo interview since diving headfirst into the presidential race eight weeks ago, and it was a sight that may have left people wondering if she was reading from a script or simply lost in her own thoughts. The mainstream media, true to form, are either ignoring this entertaining display or misrepresenting it as a smash hit. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.

The interview, conducted by WPVI-TV’s Brian Taff, should have been a golden opportunity for Harris to lay out her vision for America. Instead, viewers were treated to a verbal riddle as Harris struggled to answer even the simplest of questions with clarity. When questioned about specific policies to alleviate the financial strain on everyday Americans, she rambled on about her peaceful upbringing and her neighbors’ ability to maintain their lawns—an intriguing angle but hardly a solution to skyrocketing prices.

After wading through a few minutes of nostalgia, Harris finally stumbled upon a familiar phrase—the “opportunity economy”—alongside some vague proposals like tax credits for small businesses and assistance for first-time homebuyers. But as any reasonable person would realize, these are about as specific as a weather forecast in a hurricane. Harris’s attempts to differentiate herself from President Biden were equally confusing, consisting mainly of repeated slogans and an assertion that she represents “a new generation of leadership.” Younger, yes, but also as lost in academia as a liberal arts major at a job fair.

In the rare moments when her responses were semi-coherent, they were downright contradictory. Take her stance on gun control: she proudly proclaimed that “we’re not taking anybody’s guns away” before touting her support for an assault weapons ban that, let’s be honest, sounds like a roundabout way of doing exactly that. Conversations about gun rights in America need clarity, and Harris appears to be working from two separate scripts on the issue—a double feature that definitely isn’t playing to rave reviews.

Predictably, the mainstream media’s narrative surrounding this car crash of an interview has been utterly perplexing. Outlets like Deadline have spun the event into a tale of Harris sticking diligently to her talking points and offering valuable insights on economics, despite clear evidence to the contrary. Newsweek and others have joined the fray by painting a rosy picture of Harris’s supposed specificity while conveniently glossing over the meandering nature of her responses.

Instead of acknowledging the elephant in the room—that Harris may not be equipped to handle unscripted questions—the left-leaning press are busy crafting a fairy tale where Harris emerges as a economic sorceress. CNN, in a refreshing twist for any news outlet, simply aired the interview without any embellishing commentary, putting the audience in the position of judgment. Perhaps they thought the masses should decide for themselves whether to see a potential president or just a reality show contestant fumbling through a script.

In a political landscape desperate for clarity and direction, Harris’s recent performance does little to instill confidence among voters. The media’s desperate attempts to spin this interview into a success only showcase their commitment to a narrative that desperately needs a plot twist. The truth is that when the cameras are off and the consultants aren’t whispering in her ear, the Vice President is left to fend for herself—and that’s when the fumbling really begins.
