Vice President Kamala Harris took the stage in a recent CNN town hall, only to stumble over her attempt to win over voters. CNN host Dana Bash bluntly stated that Harris failed to “close the deal” with the audience during the event moderated by Anderson Cooper. It seems that throwing words around like confetti isn’t enough when trying to sell a package deal of policies that no one can quite pinpoint.
Harris did manage to brand former President Donald Trump as a fascist, which is about as original as calling the sun hot. However, her answers during the event seemed to epitomize the phrase “word salad,” leaving audiences and analysts alike scratching their heads. Bash noted that Harris didn’t shed any light on her legislative priorities for a future administration, which surely screams confidence in her policy proposals. Instead, viewers were left with more questions than answers, wondering just what Harris stood for beyond the usual political chatter.
As Bash pointed out, while some may question whether Harris is being judged differently than her male counterparts, the reality is that voters are searching for clarity. They want to know what she plans to do rather than just learning about her “character” in a vague manner. Yet, in the realm of electioneering, just being in front of an audience evidently can be considered a small victory. The irony doesn’t escape anyone—if merely being present is a win, then it reflects poorly on her overall campaign strategy.

In a twist of irony, Harris has recently attempted to spice things up with a media blitz, after seeming to avoid interviews like a plague. However, her prior appearances included engagements with everyone from the likes of Howard Stern to appearances on CBS late-night shows. Not exactly a rigorous schedule of hard-hitting political interviews. One has to ask if this was truly a strategy or merely running around with a box of band-aids, desperately trying to fix a sinking ship as the election approaches.
In the polling world, things don’t look any brighter for Harris. A recent Wall Street Journal poll shows her trailing Trump by two points—47% to 45%. With only 45% favorability and a 53% unfavorable rating looming over her like a dark cloud, one has to wonder if her strategy is akin to whistling past the graveyard. Trump may be nipping at her heels on the poll front, especially as a spread of third-party candidates continues to confuse matters. As the campaign season heats up, Harris’s inability to present a coherent vision may just hand the advantage back to the man in the red tie, leaving the Democrats scrambling for solutions as they stare down at a potential election disaster.
