Kamala Harris is engaged in a jaw-dropping and utterly shameless political rebranding effort that’s more about smoke and mirrors than any substance. Her strategy revolves around three key components: she’s conveniently ditching her previous positions without so much as a “by your leave,” she’s pretending that the Biden-Harris administration is somehow different from the one currently in office, and she’s basking in an endless barrage of uncritical media attention. Over the past month, this strategy has been in full throttle.

Her recent speech at a Democratic National Convention could be summarized in one sentence: the message to Americans was that they should stop living in a reality where they are forced to pay high prices for groceries and gas. This comes from a woman who is part of the administration responsible for exactly those realities. One has to wonder how she can stand at a podium calling for change while being entrenched in the very system that Americans believe is failing them. The audacity is stunning.

The media, particularly outlets like CNN, seems to be fully on board with this dubious rebrand. One reporter recently waxed lyrical about Harris’s speech while ignoring the fact that she’s still the vice president in a sitting administration that has held power for years. It almost feels like the network is playing make-believe, fueling her narrative of being some sort of change agent while conveniently glossing over her current role. The sense of irony is richness personified—Harris is calling for change while benefitting from the status quo.

In the wake of Harris’s political makeover, she’s also launched a massive advertising blitz, attempting to convince voters that she’s not the same ideologue who has anchored the Biden administration’s sinking ship. The absurdity reaches farcical heights when one considers her ads promoting an unyielding border security presence, even though she has historically been loud and proud about her opposition to President Trump’s border policies. Some campaign footage appears to feature Trump-era border wall sections—built and paid for by a presidency she criticized at every turn. How’s that for a contradiction wrapped in a political ad? 

 

Adding to the comedy, Harris continues to dodge substantive media inquiries while her fans in journalism graciously step in, providing backup and cover instead of asking the tough questions. Despite the many failures of her tenure, she hasn’t faced a formal press conference or a single challenging interview, all while her lackeys in the media cheer her on like it’s the Superbowl. For millions of Americans, this kind of behavior raises eyebrows at best and ignites furious laughter at worst. The only consistency in her messaging seems to be her ability to turn the truth on its head, bolstered by a compliant press corps eager to carry her water.
