Kevin Roberts, President of the Heritage Foundation, has struck a familiar but vital chord by emphasizing the importance of the family as the bedrock of American society. His comments echo what many of our Founding Fathers understood: that without strong families, self-government and liberty cannot endure. For generations, the family has been the cornerstone of our culture, providing moral training, civic responsibility, and social stability. Yet today, that very foundation is under relentless assault, not only from cultural shifts but also from misguided government policies that too often devalue parents’ rights and prioritize the state.
The decline in family strength since the 1960s has been nothing short of catastrophic. Declining marriage rates, rising fatherlessness, and collapsing birth rates all paint a picture of a society drifting dangerously from its moorings. These problems aren’t confined to personal hardships—they manifest in economic stagnation, higher crime, weakened educational outcomes, and even threats to national security. In a society where families are fractured, the state steps in to fill the void, creating a cycle of dependency that erodes freedom generation after generation. As Roberts warns, this is not simply a cultural problem—it is a national crisis.
Adding insult to injury, certain political leaders on the Left seem downright determined to separate children from parental influence. Whether it’s radical curricula in schools, efforts to keep parents in the dark about their kids’ gender identity decisions, or the ever-expanding reach of federal programs into family life, the message is clear: government knows best. It’s a dangerous echo of authoritarian ideologies of the past, which understood that dismantling the family was the surest way to control the people. But Americans who cherish freedom understand that when the family weakens, chaos follows, and liberty slips away.
Recent remarks from figures like Senator Tim Kaine only deepen the concern. Kaine’s suggestion that rights stem from government rather than God flies in the face of every principle upon which America was founded. The Declaration of Independence made it unmistakable—our rights are endowed by our Creator, not granted by bureaucrats. Rights derived from government can be revoked at a whim, turning citizens into subjects. It’s no coincidence that undermining the family and redefining the source of human rights often go hand in hand; both erode the foundations of liberty and empower the state over the individual.
If America hopes to reclaim its moral and civic vitality, its leaders must fight to restore and prioritize the family. That means policies that encourage marriage, reduce economic burdens on young families, and strengthen parental rights in education and beyond. It also means a cultural revival where families are celebrated rather than denigrated. As Roberts rightly underscores, America’s greatness depends not on government largesse, but on strong homes. A healthy family structure is America’s first line of defense against chaos and tyranny—and without it, there is little left for liberty to stand on.
