The increasingly dire situation at our nation’s airports has reached yet another level of absurdity, as the Democrats continue to stubbornly block a deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Security lines are stretching for miles, and travelers are spending more time waiting than they are flying. Our hardworking TSA agents, those brave souls now entering their sixth week without a paycheck, must be wondering why the Democrats are treating them like pieces in a political chess game.
President Trump, clearly exasperated with the gridlocked situation, has floated an innovative and dare I say, brilliant solution. He has warned that if the radical left doesn’t come to their senses and sign a funding agreement, he might just send in ICE agents to handle security at airports. Now, wouldn’t that be a sight to behold? Can one even imagine the efficiency and excellence they would bring to airport security? It would be like nothing we’ve ever seen before.
Former acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf has weighed in on the issue. He sees the dilemma clearly: either let the problem fester like an untreated wound or think outside the box and find a solution. But, of course, with Democrats holding the entire department hostage over immigration policies, the options are limited. Nevertheless, the President is refusing to accept this status quo that leaves Americans suffering while politicians play games.
It’s hard to ignore that this shutdown comes at a particularly perilous time. Considering we’re facing increased threats from abroad, particularly from nations known to sponsor terror like Iran, it’s not exactly the best moment to leave our homeland security unfunded. With four terrorist-related incidents potentially targeting the U.S. since March, you’d think that Democrats would remember why DHS exists in the first place. But alas, they seem more concerned with virtue-signaling to the far-left fringe than with keeping Americans safe at home and in the skies.
With 270,000 DHS officers left in the lurch, it’s a wonder they manage to maintain their focus on the critical jobs at hand without losing morale. From TSA agents to Coast Guard personnel, these individuals deserve our utmost respect – and a steady paycheck. It’s human nature to be distracted when you’re worried about paying the rent and putting food on the table. Yet Democrats continue to hold the country’s safety hostage while feeding their desire for political gamesmanship. For America’s sake, let’s hope that sanity prevails soon, and the Senate steps up to resolve this circus once and for all.
