In a world where justice is supposed to be blind and impartial, some officials appear to have a little more bias than Lady Justice intended. Consider, for instance, the intriguing case of Letitia James. It seems she decided before her morning coffee was brewed that her mission was to “prosecute Donald Trump.” Rather an ambitious slogan for someone tasked with upholding the law, wouldn’t you say? This partisan approach poses a significant problem, undermining the integrity of the justice system she’s supposed to serve.
Letitia James, handpicked to uphold justice—but not exactly in the way one might expect—has been actively engaged in what some would call “lawfare.” While her title might suggest impartial judgment, her actions and the campaign promises she touted, reveal a different picture. Her enthusiasm for pursuing Donald Trump was born long before any evidence of wrongdoing was available, and that revelation is nothing short of a political witch hunt.
One might wonder what the Department of Justice’s top brass could achieve with such zeal applied elsewhere. Perhaps solving cold cases or bringing real criminals to justice might be a tad more productive? Instead, James’s pursuit ended with nothing to show for it but an appeals court casually tossing out her extravagant $500 million civil fraud penalty against Trump. Now, some might say justice was served by revealing James’s hand as one overplayed, but, unfortunately, taxpayer resources were squandered on this circus.
Not only do her missteps in prosecuting Trump warrant scrutiny, but it seems Lady Justice has been tapping her foot impatiently while waiting for some accountability on fraud allegations against James herself. A report detailed some rather interesting patterns of financial and property disclosures under her watch. The kind of patterns that would make even the boldest accountant reach for a stress ball. Alas, accountability appears to be the department’s least favorite word when it comes to their own ranks.
In such a scenario, one can understand why the former president might question why accountability hasn’t touched James’s doorstep. After all, if energy can be spent in such abundance to chase after him without cause, surely there must be an equal and opposite reaction regarding her endeavors. At the end of the day, the spectacle leaves one to ponder who actually serves the public and who is simply serving their own ambition in a court they weren’t elected to lead.
