The hypocrisy of the liberal media knows no bounds. Recently, numerous prominent news outlets have turned their backs on the new press guidelines instituted by the Trump administration’s Pentagon, claiming these rules are overly restrictive. Yet, it is rich irony that these very same organizations signed on to far more oppressive policies during the Obama era. Their outrage now is nothing more than a smokescreen hiding their past compliance with stringent censorship tactics at Guantánamo Bay.
Outlets like The Washington Post, NBC News, and The New York Times willingly agreed to perceive restrictions at Gitmo as acceptable, all in the name of national security. Rather than demonstrating integrity, they chose to function under a heavy-handed censorship scheme that controlled everything from what they could report on to how they could interact with detainees. They climbed aboard the liberal media train that has been traveling down the road of censorship for far too long. Their current boycott of the new guidelines exposes a glaring inconsistency in their principles.
The reported restrictions included extensive guidelines on photo and video coverage, an oversight that granted military censors unprecedented authority to demand edits or deletions of reporters’ work. Ironically, this burden of censorship was acknowledged and accepted by these very outlets when it suited their narratives—a betrayal of press freedom that has now blown up in their faces. The Trump administration offered more balanced protections that featured stronger freedoms for journalists while simultaneously safeguarding national security concerns. But what did the liberal media do? They chose to “self-deport” rather than embrace these updated guidelines.

Let’s set the record straight: the same journalists who cried foul at the slightest hint of a curtailment of their rights signed up to censorship under both Obama and Biden like obedient foot soldiers, surrendering their First Amendment protections without a blink. Who are they to lecture anyone on journalistic integrity? This widespread boycott appears less about protecting the sanctity of the press and more about grandstanding for an audience that craves the narrative of victimization. Their whining and complaining ring hollow when they’ve already walked down the path of capitulation.
If the media is truly committed to ensuring transparency, then why did they cheer for the stifling restrictions laid out by prior administrations? This betrayal of journalistic integrity should not be overlooked. The path they chose when they supported oppressive media guidelines speaks volumes about their actual priorities. Simply put, they need to own their past complicity instead of twisting the narrative to suit their current outrage.
The conservative movement’s steadfast defense of free speech is under constant threat from this very hypocrisy. As journalists choose to erase their courage in the name of acceptance, one can only wonder: how much longer will they allow their voices to be stifled? In a quest for relevance, they may just find themselves further entrenched in the swamp of censorship they once criticized. This isn’t just a media issue—it’s an American issue. What happened to the bold reporting? Where is the accountability?
