Secretary of State Marco Rubio is caught in a bind where his diplomatic niceness can sometimes sound more like a warm hug for those who seek to undermine the very fabric of America. Recently, during a televised interview, Rubio faced a query from CBS News’ Margaret Brennan, who attempted to weave a narrative that an excess of free speech was responsible for historical atrocities, like the Holocaust. With this display of historical ignorance, it’s tempting to wonder if she missed history class to binge-watch self-righteous documentaries instead.
The secretary was probed about the impending deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Hamas activist who has been stirring up chaos at Columbia University while living here on a green card. Khalil’s detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement has provided liberals with ample material to paint him as a martyr for free speech, turning him into something he’s not—an American citizen. In reality, he is a guest who forgot the most basic tenet of hospitality: don’t torch the place while you’re visiting.
In a more straightforward world, the premise of Khalil’s support for an organization notorious for raping, murdering, and abducting should be enough for any rational person to agree he’s not exactly a model citizen. But for the left, this is too cut-and-dry; rather than denounce his actions, they’d much prefer to label his deportation an infringement of rights. Of course, that redefinition of rights only seems to apply to him and others of his ilk, who regularly cheer for the downfall of America while thumping their chests about free speech.

Rubio stood firm, reiterating that visas should not be granted to anyone backing violent terrorist groups. For the secretary, it’s a common-sense approach: support oppression, and take your leave. Unlike the liberal elite who seem all too willing to place the needs of international insurrectionists above those of American citizens, Rubio upholds the notion that disruptive protests hurt the educational environment. Khalil’s antics have resulted in chaos on campus, raising questions about freedom of speech’s limits when it is used to advocate for violence against one’s own nation.
The dizzying contradiction of the left is indeed hard to miss. They champion the idea of privacy while simultaneously rallying behind people who engage in dangerous rhetoric. It’s like they’ve lost complete track of what constitutes true American values. The same individuals who would march for civil liberties seem more than happy to support a guy who openly supports terrorism—clearly hoping the public will forget that the conflict is not just ideological but also one of survival and safety for countless innocent lives.
This case serves as a perfect illustration of how far-left activists twist the very ideals that built this country, trying to turn American freedoms into tools for their own benefit. For Khalil, and others who think they can flout the law while waving the free speech banner, it’s time to pack their bags. America has room for many things, but a platform for terrorism is not one of them.
