Mark Teixeira: America Needs Your Voice Now

The government shutdown is now well into its second week, and as always, the political blame game is in full swing. If someone were to believe the mainstream media, all fingers point towards those dastardly Republicans. However, if you dig beneath the surface even a little bit, it’s clear that the Democrats are the ones having a bit of a temper tantrum. Recent antics have seen them chanting outside Speaker Johnson’s office, perhaps believing that this will somehow lead to an epiphany that reopens Congress. Or maybe they’re just hoping the shouting will drown out their own hypocrisy.

Let’s take a look at the facts. Republicans have done their homework and put forward a clean Continuing Resolution (CR), which basically means no new items, no extra cuts. It’s a straightforward deal meant to keep things running while negotiations continue. Historical context tells us that parties who vote against such clean measures usually find themselves at the receiving end of criticism. Yet, miraculously, the Democrats have managed to escape this fate. Is this a case of double standards? One might wonder if the media would be as forgiving if the tables were turned.

There’s a tasty chunk of irony here as well. Democrats have supported similar extensions in the past without a peep of protest. What’s changed? It seems the tune has changed, and one could argue that they are not really interested in making music unless they’re the ones writing the notes. Perhaps they should consider that they’re not the only players in this orchestra.

Adding to the melodrama is the threat to hold the American worker and the military hostage, all because the Democrats haven’t got their way. It’s a strategy right out of a child’s playbook—if I can’t have it, then nobody can. What they don’t seem to realize is that it’s the average American who pays the price for their stubbornness. Maybe it’s time for the Democrats to remember what it means to serve the people rather than their own agenda.

The demand for a sane approach to governance has never been stronger. As one congressional candidate astutely put it, the shutdown drama is a sign of weak Democratic leadership. Perhaps it’s time for them to accept that when you lose, you must adapt. The sooner both parties acknowledge this, the better. As it stands, the refusal to budge is reminiscent of a child sticking their fingers in their ears and yelling “la la la” in the hopes that the world will simply disappear. Maybe it’s time to grow up and get back to work.
