If there’s one thing former Texas Representative Mayra Flores loves more than conservative values, it’s apparently taking credit for other people’s food photos! The ex-lawmaker found herself in hot water this week after she posted some drool-worthy images of Mexican dishes on social media and implied they were hers. “The Ranch life with family is the best,” she captioned the photos, trying to pass them off as her own. But hold on to your sombreros, because it turns out these images weren’t even hers!
An investigation by the website Current Revolt uncovered that the photos Flores claimed were “gorditas de masa” were actually swiped from a Guyanese travel page. Talk about being caught with your hand in the cookie jar! And this wasn’t a one-time enchilada, folks! The website also found other instances where Flores allegedly passed off food photos as her own, including one where she even got into a discussion about the type of cheese in a photo she posted. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t her cheese!
When asked about the uproar, Flores claimed she didn’t mean to mislead anyone and promptly deleted the offending post to clear up any “confusion.” She shared, “The photo simply reminded me of my upbringing in Mexico and childhood. I deleted the tweet to clear up any confusion. I actually spend my Christmas at ranch with my In-Laws. Happy New Year!” Nice try, Flores! But trying to cover your tracks with a cozy Christmas story won’t fix the mess you’re in.
To top it all off, this embarrassing scandal comes just as Flores announced her bid for Texas’s 34th Congressional District. Perhaps she thought claiming ownership of some mouth-watering Mexican dishes would give her a boost in the race? Who knows, but it looks like her campaign might need some extra spice after this. Unfortunately for Flores, this isn’t her first rodeo in the political ring. She previously represented the district before being ousted by Rep. Vicente Gonzalez in a special election last year. Maybe “Grubgate” will be what people remember the next time she’s on the ballot!
