McEnany Sounds Alarm on Growing D.C. Power Grab

In yet another example of where common sense seems to be in peril, the Department of Transportation has decided it’s time to enforce certain federal laws regarding the issuance of commercial driver’s licenses. What a novel concept—to actually follow the laws that are already in the books! This action emerges after a number of deadly crashes involving truckers who, not only shouldn’t have been operating those massive rigs, but also couldn’t communicate in basic English or read road signs. It sounds like a bad setup for reality TV, but it’s just the grim reality on our highways.

On a balmy drive through northern Florida, transportation officials have been hard at work. Their mission? Crack down on what’s become an all-too-common scenario. Troopers are pulling over truckers who fail safety exams due to language barriers, thus putting fellow motorists at risk. When nearly half of the truckers passing through these way stations can’t speak English well enough to understand road signs or communicate with law enforcement, one has to wonder how this has been allowed to continue. Apparently, “learn English or stay off the road” is too much to ask.

Remember the young girl critically injured a while back? Her plight led to Delila’s Law, aiming to keep away undocumented immigrants from obtaining a commercial driver’s license when they don’t meet the language requirement. Yet, some truck companies seem more interested in a fatter bottom line than safety. Who knew American lives could be so easily traded for a bit of extra cash? This problem isn’t just local; it’s a nationwide issue. In fact, a recent audit revealed a staggering number of CDLs issued under questionable circumstances in states like California and New York. Coincidence? I think not.

Moreover, some states, not having their fill of reckless decision-making, persist in allowing these illegally issued licenses. This tendency to cut corners speaks volumes. Apparently, pointing out that reading road signs in English is a basic safety requirement is labeled as racist by some. Is it cruel or racist to expect a driver of an 80,000-pound truck barreling down the highway to know what a “keep right” sign means? Perhaps the real cruelty is risking the safety of American families for a misguided notion of compassion.

It is high time this troubling scenario was put to rest. We must enforce existing laws strictly and ensure that everyone who gets behind the wheel of these mammoth machines adheres to safety standards universally. Offering perks like driver’s licenses as a reward for bypassing immigration laws doesn’t lead us anywhere good. It’s about time we prioritize the safety of American citizens over political correctness and stop playing games with our well-being on the freeway.
