President Joe Biden may have given a couple of speeches this week, but the real news is that for a whopping three days, he was nowhere to be found. What was he doing? Who knows! But in the meantime, his embattled son Hunter managed to cause quite a scene.
The president spoke in South Carolina on Monday and is set to yammer on about “Bidenomics” in Pennsylvania on Friday. But sandwiched in between, Biden was MIA. Meanwhile, Hunter dashed in and out of a congressional hearing and ended up in a California courtroom facing tax charges. It’s like a real-life soap opera, folks.
Reporters were left scratching their heads, wondering where the heck the president was. “Who decided that the American people are best served by seeing less of the president?” one intrepid reporter demanded to know. Biden’s press secretary tried to cover for him, claiming he was busy with private meetings and speeches. Sure, sure.
But while Joe was hiding from the public eye, Hunter was out there causing a ruckus on Capitol Hill, with news cameras hot on his trail. Press secretary Jean-Pierre tried to downplay the Hunter drama, reminding everyone that he’s not part of the president’s team. Yeah, we get it, he’s a private citizen. But a juicy scandal is a juicy scandal, regardless of who’s involved.
And of course, the Republicans are lapping it all up. They’re making a big fuss about Joe’s disappearing act, calling it “retiree” behavior. They’re also snickering about the fact that Joe hasn’t sat down for a news interview in ages and has rarely made public appearances recently. They’re practically counting down the days until the next election, gleefully predicting that America will send Biden packing.
So, what’s the deal with Joe’s absence? Some Democrats think it’s all a strategic move, while others are just happy to let the scandalous events take center stage. But hey, Joe Biden has pulled off disappearing acts before, like during the 2020 election, when he managed to defeat Donald Trump. And who could forget the infamous “basement Biden” phase? It may have been scoffed at, but it sure didn’t stop him from winning the presidency.
