In the midst of the chaotic scene unfolding at the border, it seems that once again, reason and law have taken a backseat to mayhem and protest. According to reports from the Department of Homeland Security, a dramatic and dangerous confrontation occurred when a man approached a U.S. Border Patrol officer wielding a 9mm handgun. It doesn’t take much imagination to guess what his intentions were, approaching law enforcement in such a manner. The officers attempted to disarm the suspect, but he resisted violently, leading to shots being fired in defense. Regrettably, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
In what appears to be a growing trend, the aftermath of the shooting quickly morphed into a chaotic protest. With about 200 rioters descending upon the scene, officers found themselves besieged by those eager to condemn law enforcement before any investigation could even begin. The protesters, filled with righteous indignation, took up the battle cry, hurling refuse and barricading roads in an attempt to disrupt the necessary investigations. It seems some folks believe that obstructing law and order is the best way to champion justice, proving once again that logic isn’t always their strong suit.
Amidst the tumult, Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi offered a voice of reason, reminding us that the enforcement of the law remains critically important. Listening to the calls for ICE and other federal law enforcement to hightail it out of town, one might wonder if some politicians are better suited for a sitcom than a serious public office. After all, leaving borders open and undefended would surely bring about just the kind of chaos these protesters seem to thrive on.
The Department of Homeland Security was hoping for cooperation, suggesting that working together could help handle matters with more coordination and less confrontation. Yet, here we are, watching scenes that look more like the set of a chaotic reality TV show than a situation aiming for resolution. Governor Reeves dared to point out the obvious: that federal law enforcement officers are here to enforce laws. It’s that simple. No amount of flag-waving, upside down or otherwise, changes the fact that lawbreakers, including the ten million illegal entries allowed by the previous administration, are not going to receive a free pass.
Amusingly enough, there continues to be this wild notion that perhaps the nation would run better if its leaders simply turned a blind eye to laws they don’t personally agree with. But as the President, Donald Trump, has so often reminded us, a nation that compromises its borders compromises its very identity. So, amid the clamor and calls for less enforcement, one cannot help but wonder what kind of country we’d wake up to if the same vocal protesters had their way—one where unlawful behavior is overlooked and law enforcement vilified. Now that’s a chilling thought, indeed.
