MSNBC President Rashida Jones Rumored to Exit as Trump Prepares Second Term

MSNBC President Rashida Jones appears to be on the brink of a much-needed getaway as the network’s ratings continue their steep descent into the abyss, coinciding with Donald Trump preparing to reclaim the spotlight for yet another historic term. A recent report suggests that after Trump is inaugurated for his second term on January 20, 2025, Jones might just choose to exit stage left, making one wonder if she’s already packed her bags in anticipation of the inevitable chaos.

Despite a spokesperson for Jones dismissing the rumors of her departure, and NBCUniversal staying mum, the whispers of her potential exit suggest that she may be preparing to jump ship rather than weathering the storm that is a Trump presidency. After all, ratings are tanking at MSNBC, and it’s not exactly a secret that they’ve been betting on Trump’s demise for a while. A bad bet, to say the least. Watching the network flounder in this environment is akin to witnessing a sinking ship that’s decided to anchor itself to an iceberg.

Taking over from Phil Griffin in 2021, Jones has reportedly enjoyed a successful tenure — if success is measured in relative terms, like being slightly better than CNN. This so-called success means that on election night, MSNBC managed to surpass CNN in ratings for the first time. Bravo! That’s like taking home the trophy for the worst Olympic athlete. It’s a pat on the back and a participation trophy wrapped up in delusion.

Under Jones’s reign, the network dished out a steady diet of partisan drivel, where Trump was regarded more as a boogeyman than a legitimate candidate. Following the election results, MSNBC viewers were given a harsh wake-up call, as their happy-talk schtick about Kamala Harris’ invincibility crumbled faster than a cookie in a toddler’s hands. They fashioned a fantastical narrative that neatly dismissed any remote possibility of Trump emerging victorious again, leading their viewers on an escapist joyride that ended with a hard crash against reality.

The ratings dive has been nothing short of catastrophic, with ratings in primetime plummeting by a staggering 52 percent. Recovering from this mess seems like an impossible task, especially as the network’s reach out to its hardcore leftist base began to disintegrate under the weight of their own denial. Given the current landscape, handing Joy Reid a primetime slot might just drive the final nail in the coffin. The left, facing their own version of buyer’s remorse, may have moved on in search of something—anything—that wouldn’t leave them feeling like they’ve been had.

As cable news faces an uncertain future, it’s becoming more possible that Jones feels the pressure akin to what Bill Maher experiences: a soul-crushing defeat after years of waiting for Trump’s downfall that just never came. With Trump marching back into the limelight, the prospect of covering him will likely feel like a bitter reminder of their miscalculations and failures, making the option of resigning a tempting escape route. The once-mighty forces at MSNBC are now floundering, and for Jones, it might just be time to retreat while the going is good.
