The tragic news of the death of Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old National Guardsman from West Virginia, has sent waves of sorrow and outrage throughout the nation. Her life was tragically cut short by an unprovoked attack in the nation’s capital, a place where she volunteered to serve on Thanksgiving so others could enjoy the holiday with their families. And, as if the story weren’t heartbreaking enough, her colleague remains in critical condition, fighting for survival. The suspect, who traveled from Washington state, ambushed these soldiers without warning, leaving a traumatized family and a grieving nation in its wake.
The suspect in this horrific crime is an asylum seeker from Afghanistan, granted entry last April as part of Operation Allies Welcome. Apparently, this individual had once been part of an elite Afghan counter-terrorism force, which should have involved rigorous vetting. However, the tragic outcome of his actions now calls into question the efficacy of those vetting processes. The Biden administration’s approach to handling asylum seekers, particularly in situations fraught with delicate international implications, has left many citizens uneasy. Suddenly, President Trump’s call for more stringent immigration controls doesn’t seem quite as outrageous, does it?
The Department of Justice has pledged to pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law, potentially escalating charges to first-degree murder. The Attorney General underscored the severity and senselessness of the act, highlighting that they would seek the death penalty for this ‘monster.’ There’s an undeniable sense of anger shared by many conservatives who feel this tragic event could have been prevented with better immigration policies. After all, it’s not asking too much to ensure that those entering the country don’t pose a threat to its citizens, is it?
As the political theater continues, certain media outlets, like The Atlantic, insist on placing blame squarely on the Trump administration, citing that the Afghan national’s entry was part of a program it initiated. Yet, the frustrating irony is that these same outlets gloss over the critical role the National Guard has played in reducing crime rates in areas they’d been deployed, including Washington D.C., where they’ve successfully curbed homicides and thefts. Instead of acknowledging these accomplishments, there’s an inclination to reduce them to mere political pawns. Perhaps these critics would feel safer without the presence of those in uniform risking their lives every day? Just a thought.
In the aftermath, there is no escaping the painful reality: a young woman, sworn in barely a day before, has lost her life, and her fellow soldier remains in peril. President Trump, offering words of comfort, reminds the grieving parents and the nation that their daughter’s sacrifice won’t be forgotten. While some might want to minimize the role of the administration in maintaining national safety, the truth is, without decisive actions and leaders willing to make tough decisions, tragedies like these will be the headlines we dread reading but must confront. The safety of American lives should outweigh political correctness and misguided compassion; after all, isn’t protection the very least a government owes its people?
