National security expert: Putin won’t celebrate this setback

In the tangled web of international diplomacy, the latest chapter from the Ukraine saga sure sounds more like political theater than a peace negotiation. President Putin, who seems to have taken a page out of the “Let’s Talk, But Not Really” playbook, is now reviewing a draft U.S. peace plan. This plan has apparently been designated as “tremendous progress” by the ever-optimistic President Trump. However, judging by the way matters have been dragging on for years, one might be forgiven for being just a tad skeptical about these talks.

Let’s cut to the chase. Despite some so-called peaceful chit-chats, the progress is, in reality, as slow as molasses in winter. And as one might expect, Putin doesn’t fancy ending this power play on a losing note. Meanwhile, fair play to Ukraine, which is holding the line impressively, especially with those pesky drone and missile attacks. One can’t help but offer a sardonic chuckle: if this is what progress looks like, maybe we should redefine the term.

On the other hand, some experts think that turning up the heat might make ol’ Vladimir sweat a bit. The idea is to squeeze those buying Russian oil with secondary sanctions. It’s like trying to twist the arm of a bully by convincing his friends to ditch him. One would hope that these added pressures might finally get Putin to come to his senses—or at least act like he has some.

In the midst of this geopolitical ballet, where Russia pirouettes into Ukraine, the international audience seems to temper its outrage with a shrug. Missile strikes on civilian targets should be getting us all riled up, but when Ukraine’s Patriot air defense missiles intercept those attacks, it becomes more of a “they can handle it” narrative. Surely, if there were ever a time for a loud international chorus demanding peace, now would be it.

As we look forward, one can’t disregard the role the U.S. could play. The hope is for a strong, prosperous Ukraine—something that might actually put a dent in this chaos. But until the curtain finally falls, the world watches as players on this stage navigate this whirlwind of conflicts and negotiations, waiting to see how the next act unfolds. Whether Putin takes the economic bait or leans into brute force, the conclusion remains anyone’s guess.
