According to federal prosecutors, 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant was planning a New Year’s Eve spree that targeted innocent civilians at a grocery store and a fast-food restaurant. One might wonder what could compel such a young person, living amid the comforts of suburban Charlotte, to embrace such ideologies. It seems like the FBI got his number right from the start, keeping an eye on him since his underage days.
This case unfolded with a buildup that could rival a suspense thriller, revealing a plan that included weapons such as hammers and butcher knives stashed with the intention of inflicting maximum havoc. Reports suggest Sturdivant had psychological evaluations in the past, ordered by a judge, no less—a precaution that seems pertinent in hindsight. As it stands, he’s now facing federal charges for attempting to aid a foreign terrorist organization, potentially setting the stage for a courtroom drama where a federal judge will decide his fate. The maximum penalty he faces is 20 years in federal prison, a sobering prospect for someone who has barely begun adulthood.
