New York City faces a socialist nightmare as mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani pushes his dangerous plan for government-run grocery stores. This radical Democrat wants to replace your neighborhood supermarket with communist-style food distribution centers. Hard-working store owners like John Catsimatidis are already warning they will shut down and leave the city if this socialist wins.
Mamdani calls himself a democratic socialist, but there is nothing democratic about destroying free enterprise. His plan would force taxpayers to fund grocery stores that compete directly with family-owned businesses. This is pure socialism disguised as helping working families.
Every country that tried government-run grocery stores failed miserably. The Soviet Union had empty shelves and long bread lines. Venezuela turned into a food desert under socialist control. Cuba still rations basic groceries to this day.
American grocery stores work because of competition and profit motivation. Store owners work hard to keep shelves stocked and prices fair because they need customers to survive. Government bureaucrats have no reason to care if you can find milk or bread.
Mamdani wants to spend 60 million taxpayer dollars on this socialist experiment. That money should go back to working families, not fund government grocery stores that will fail just like they always do. New Yorkers already pay the highest taxes in America.
Private grocery chains only make 1 to 2 percent profit after covering all their costs. These are not greedy corporations price gouging families. They are businesses trying to survive in one of the most expensive cities in America.
Crime and shoplifting are the real problems driving grocery stores out of New York neighborhoods. Instead of fixing law and order, Mamdani wants government to take over the food supply. This is exactly how communist countries control their people.
New Yorkers must reject this socialist takeover before it destroys their city. Free markets and private businesses built America into the greatest nation on earth. Don’t let radical Democrats like Mamdani turn New York into the next Venezuela.
