In sunny California, the land famous for its beaches, Hollywood stars, and, evidently, remarkable levels of governmental inefficiency, a family is left grappling with an unimaginable ordeal. A determined father, faced with a tragedy that no parent should ever have to endure, is demanding answers from the ever-elusive Governor Gavin Newsom. One might wonder why a California governor would suddenly develop an aversion to communication, but we’ll get to that in a moment.
It seems an illegal immigrant, with a license handed over by the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles as easily as a bag of popcorn at the movies, caused a multi-car crash while driving an 18-wheeler. This horrific incident left six-year-old Delilah, a sweet child brimming with life, severely injured. Delilah was on a highway, where construction detours and California heat waves seem to combine forces to create chaos. Tragically, a semi-truck failed to stop, plowing through several vehicles and changing the course of innocent lives forever.
Young Delilah endured unspeakable injuries as she spent weeks in a coma and even more time in the hospital. A traumatic brain injury, a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, and developmental delays now require her to undergo multiple therapies. With two younger siblings quickly surpassing her developmentally, her parents’ hearts break daily watching her struggle. Their challenges are immense, not least of which include trying to get the attention of their state leader, who appears to be adopting a “hear no evil, see no evil” philosophy.
As the grieving father reached out to Governor Newsom’s office, one might have expected at least an automated response. Alas, not even that. Those sitting comfortably in political offices up in Sacramento allegedly dismissed the situation as a local issue, unworthy of state-level attention, as if the rules of decency change at the county line. It became painfully obvious that whether it’s South California or North, the governor’s office should aim to rise above regional divisions, but apparently, they would sooner respond to a cat stuck in a tree.
This unfortunate narrative unfolds in a peculiar land where the DMV seemingly hands out commercial driver’s licenses to anyone with a pulse, legal status notwithstanding. It’s a state where human lives are apparently exchanged for political games of chess. The family continues to cope with the aftermath, clinging to their memories of their once-vibrant daughter. With little choice but to turn to the media to be their megaphone, they’re proving themselves to be a formidable force demanding change. So perhaps, in time, Newsom might feel a gentle tap on his shoulder—oh wait, that’s just accountability trying to get his attention.
