This became alarmingly apparent as a student at New York University found herself attacked in broad daylight. The incident was captured on surveillance video showing a man creeping up on the unsuspecting student, pulling her to the ground by her hair. The assailant, James Rizzo, is no stranger to crime with an astonishing rap sheet, having been charged sixteen times for various offenses, including sex crimes. Yet, somehow, he remains a free man, continuing to roam the streets, as evidenced by this latest attack.
Residents and students in Greenwich Village walk with a perpetual swivel of the head, unsure of who or what might be lurking around the corner. The recent attack spotlights the serious concern that law-abiding citizens shouldn’t have to glance over their shoulders with every step they take on their way to simply attend a class. It’s baffling that Rizzo, a man with a previous incarceration for similar offenses, was released just last month and already added another crime to his list, seemingly without consequence.
