Obamas Attempt to Revive Faltering Democratic Convention With Star Power and Trump Critiques

Night two of the Democratic National Convention unfolded in a manner reminiscent of a B-list Hollywood premiere, with the headliners being none other than Barack and Michelle Obama. Clearly, the Dems are in survival mode, desperately attempting to revive their uninspired base post-Biden era. Night one was a lackluster farewell for a president nobody seems sad to see go, eclipsed by scheduling misfires. Yet, the Obamas brought their A-game to ensure this event didn’t end by tossing Joe Biden’s legacy into the spotlight again. Thank goodness for term limits because it’s hard to imagine how else America would survive another term from the former first couple.

Michelle Obama’s disinterest in running for office is probably the only silver lining in the Democratic cloud, as she could likely trounce any Republican contender with ease. It’s almost comical to think that the pair, who have built a nearly invincible political coalition, are now the Democrats’ last hope. The duo did their duty by energizing the crowd while simultaneously taking playful jabs at Donald Trump, the uninvited guest they can’t (and won’t) stop talking about.

Taking to the mic, Michelle decided to twist Trump’s past comments about “black jobs” into a misguided attempt to paint him as the party’s resident racist. It’s quite the stretch, considering the political legacy of the Obamas, whose wealth now comfortably places them in the one percent. President Obama also contributed to the comedic routine by referencing Trump’s obsession with crowd sizes, a nice distraction from Biden’s plummeting approval ratings. In a bizarre moment of irony, Obama paid tribute to Biden without acknowledging all the times he failed to back him like a magician effortlessly pulling rabbits from a hat.

Despite their charismatic prowess, the Obamas are masters of illusion. Living lavishly in multiple homes—one of which includes a mansion in Martha’s Vineyard—Michelle’s attempts at populism ring hollow. She preached about her parents being wary of people who took more than they deserved, all while collecting a hefty $750,000 for an hour-long lecture. The irony is rich when the Obamas, with their Ivy League educations and wealth, perfectly exemplify the very meritocracy Democrats claim to critique.

Politically, the performance achieved the intended results—if generating excitement for an increasingly dubious future with a new Democratic ticket is a win. Barack might be the only Democratic voice left genuinely engaging voters, though the sheer division that grew during his presidency is a bitter joke he now plays for laughs. His fond words about Biden as his “brother” felt hollow, considering the tension that was clearly brewing in the background. While Obama was busy showering praise, Biden was mysteriously absent, likely mulling over the fact that he has already been sidelined in the party hierarchy.

The Democratic party finds itself in quite the pickle as it prepares to hand off the reins to an underqualified candidate. The Obamas’ rallying cries are a desperate distraction from their troubling reality; a job report revision that screams disaster is looming, while the party leaves Biden out to dry. The strange narrative that the party has rallied behind Kamala Harris, who was also mysteriously absent from the scene, raises eyebrows. It’s as though the Democrats are trying to mask their internal chaos with cleverly crafted speeches, but truth be told, the cracks are starting to show.
