In what can only be described as a tragic blending of youth, fun, and unfortunate circumstances, young Brianna Aguilar, a Texas A&M student, was found dead following a football tailgate event in Austin, Texas. Now, if there’s one thing that can be said about college tailgates, it’s that they’re as American as apple pie—filled with excitement, team spirit, and a little too much beer. However, in Brianna’s case, the raucous festivities took a dark turn, ending in mystery rather than celebration.
Brianna had attended a tailgate on November 28th, but reportedly, her day spiraled out of control after she was kicked out for being too intoxicated. It seems that no good tale ever begins with “I had a salad,” and in this story, it certainly didn’t end well either. She returned to a friend’s apartment but later, around 6:00 p.m., stopped responding to her mother’s calls. That’s when parental instincts kicked in, and her mother, Stephanie Rodriguez, began to worry about her daughter’s unusual behavior.
Things grew murkier when Brianna’s phone, which was later found in a friend’s purse tossed into the woods, showed no signs of life. Even though her concerned mother reached out to the Austin police for help, department protocols didn’t allow for immediate action since Brianna hadn’t been missing for a full 24 hours. Of course, waiting for an arbitrary time period when your child is unaccounted for makes all the sense in the world, right? Bureaucracy in action.
As the night progressed, Stephanie was tormented by the lack of response from both her daughter and the authorities. A mother’s panic is a powerful motivator, and despite assurances that Brianna would turn up the next morning, such reassurances didn’t offer solace. By morning, the situation remained unchanged, and worry continued to dominate thoughts. It was only by the persistence of a sympathetic female officer that a search for Brianna was eventually initiated.
But tragedy struck with the discovery of Brianna’s body found near her apartment, marked not by foul play, according to authorities, but simply as a passing of non-suspicious nature. The circumstances—potentially a fall from the 17th story—left too many questions and too few answers. Brianna’s mother believes fervently that her daughter was not suicidal, a sentiment common among parents who know their children best. The investigation continues to move at a snail’s pace, much to the anguish of the family, who are left mocking the system that seems designed to protect and serve, except when it doesn’t.
