Pam Bondi has officially begun her tenure as attorney general, and her first day has indeed been eventful. On February 5, 2025, Bondi was sworn in as the 87th United States Attorney General after being confirmed by the Senate in a 54-46 vote. While her appointment has been met with both support and criticism, her initial actions have been less dramatic than portrayed in the original article.
On her first day, Bondi is expected to implement measures aimed at reviewing and potentially reversing legal actions taken by the previous administration. She plans to scrutinize cases brought against former President Trump, including those undertaken by prosecutors in New York. However, there is no evidence of her launching investigations into specific individuals like Jack Smith, Fani Willis, or Alvin Bragg.
Bondi has emphasized her commitment to restoring confidence and integrity to the Department of Justice. During her confirmation hearing, she stated, “Every case will be prosecuted based on the facts and the law that is applied in good faith — period. Politics have got to be taken out of the system.” She has pledged to be independent as the nation’s top prosecutor, though she has faced questions about her ability to remain impartial given her close ties to Trump.
The Justice Department is currently experiencing some turmoil, with recent firings of agents and prosecutors who worked on cases related to Trump and the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection. However, these actions were initiated before Bondi took office.
Bondi’s priorities as attorney general include addressing issues related to gangs, drugs, cartels, border security, and foreign adversaries. While her appointment has raised concerns among civil rights organizations, there is no evidence of her preparing for “lengthy legal battles” or planning arrests in response to calls for chaos from political opponents.
