Pro-Palestinian Group Cheers Shapiro’s VP Rejection Amid Democratic Rift

The pro-Palestinian group known as Abandon Biden recently celebrated the rejection of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, citing his alleged past “complicity with genocide.” Apparently, having volunteered for the Israeli military and criticized pro-Palestinian student protesters doesn’t align with the group’s ethos, and they were more than happy to draw attention to that. It’s comforting to know that there’s another faction within the Democratic Party willing to humor the idea that those with ties to Israel should be axed from leadership positions, all while demanding what amounts to a complete overhaul of the party’s foreign policy.

Following the Democratic selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for the Vice Presidential slot, the Abandon Biden campaign expressed both delight and a hint of skepticism. While they felt victorious in shutting out Shapiro, they cautioned that simply inserting a new name on the ballot doesn’t equate to an actual change in direction, especially when policy demands remain vague. After all, a new face doesn’t necessarily mean a new action plan, which seems to be the prevailing notion among some politically fatigued voters.

The group also had its eyes peeled on Walz’s comments about the situation in Gaza, terming it “intolerable.” This vague sentiment, however, didn’t completely appease Abandon Biden, who noted that Walz once dodged a meeting with Palestinians when confronted with the weight of specific policy demands. Apparently, a grown-up conversation about policy is too much to ask from Democratic leaders who seem more comfortable gesturing from the sidelines than actually taking action.

This internal strife within the Democratic Party serves as a spectacle for conservatives to observe. On the one hand, there are the pro-Palestinian factions, who, in their quest for social justice,’re ready to accuse Biden of atrocious acts while hanging him out to dry. On the other hand, pro-Israel factions are signaling disapproval at what they perceive as a lukewarm response to threats against a key ally. At this point, Biden might as well take a bow for his incredible ability to disappoint nearly everyone in his party.

Kamala Harris, for her part, has managed to dance around the contentious issues of the party while providing an ever-so-slight distance from Biden’s more controversial policies. Yet, the concern remains that the scrutiny over her chosen running mate could have as much to do with the party’s fractures as it does with genuine selection merit. After all, there’s nothing like a little internal dissent to liven up the political drama in an election cycle that’s already teetering on the edge of chaos.
