The scene on the streets of New York City has become quite the spectacle lately, filled with passionate protesters who seem to be advocating for some rather unorthodox ideas. A report from a conservative news channel highlighted the views of demonstrators who aren’t quite satisfied with the political representation they voted for and are calling for more radical changes. A standout moment in these protests featured a man suggesting that the government should make it illegal for wealthy individuals to leave the city. It’s a bold, if not downright outlandish, proposal that could have serious repercussions on the housing market. Making it illegal for rich people to leave might sound like the plot of a bad sitcom, but this is the kind of rhetoric that some folks are taking these days seriously.
It’s no secret that a lot of folks don’t quite grasp the damaging effects of such ideas. When contemplating the suggestion of seizing properties, it becomes clear that they might not understand the basics of economics. Such policies would deter investment in new housing, subsequently tightening supply and jacking up prices. They conjure up an impractical vision where property owners are suddenly at the mercy of protesters’ whims. No doubt, the lack of educational foundation in economic systems like socialism and capitalism is vividly on display here.
Switching gears to another protest topic buzzing on the streets: immigration. There’s a suggestion from protestors to have immigrants themselves take over immigration and border control duties. The irony of illegal immigrants running ICE isn’t lost on many observers who can’t help but chuckle at the impracticality of the idea. Some claim this is part of a strategy to welcome new voters who lean Democratic, granting ICE duties to those who have first-hand experience at bypassing border laws. It’s a thorny proposal that stirs debate and raises questions about how immigration policies should be shaped.
It’s a challenging job for any interviewer who tries to maintain composure in the face of such eyebrow-raising suggestions. While there is genuine interest in understanding the underlying motive behind these ideas, it often defies logic. The relentless rhetoric comparing President Trump to historical villains only fuels the flames of division and hinders productive discourse. It’s puzzling why these protestors double down on such comparisons, as if perpetuating extreme rhetoric is the only path forward. However, like clockwork, any policy win by Trump is met with unyielding skepticism or conveniently attributed to someone else.
So, when policy deliverables do happen, they often go unrecognized by those entrenched in opposition. Any achievement on immigration or housing is frequently overshadowed by the overarching narrative of defiance against Trump. It’s this persistent belief system that drives many of these protestors, seemingly rooted in a condition some have jokingly called TDS, or Trump Derangement Syndrome. Some conservatives are comfortable using this term to describe the phenomena they observe all too often on the protest lines. As the political scene remains unpredictable, attention will soon turn overseas with upcoming events in places like Spain, promising a new wave of intrigue and headline-worthy uproar.
