The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Italy has ignited a storm of controversy due to its unconventional nativity scene. Departing from the typical portrayal of Mary and Joseph, the church opted for a nativity scene featuring two mothers alongside baby Jesus. Father Vitaliano Della Sala defended this choice, aiming to spotlight the diverse tapestry of families in today's society.

However, this decision hasn't escaped criticism. Senator Maurizio Gasparri of the Forza Italy party condemned the display, citing it as disrespectful to those who revere the Holy Family. The Pro-Vita and Famiglia group went further, denouncing the nativity scene as dangerous, disgraceful, and sacrilegious, initiating an online petition urging the bishop of Avellino to intervene.
Beyond contradicting established church teachings on marriage and surrogacy, the display also clashes with Italian law, given that surrogacy and having children through such means are illegal in the country. In response, a senator from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party has proposed legislation to safeguard Christmas plays and Catholic-themed activities in schools.
Father Della Sala's endorsement of the same-sex couple aligns with his known support for LGBT rights and left-leaning causes. He even cited Pope Francis's recent decision allowing priests to bless same-sex couples as justification for his stance.
The portrayal of a non-traditional nativity scene has sparked a fiery debate. Some laud it for its representation of modern family diversity, while others vehemently condemn it as a departure from cherished traditional values. As the controversy rages on, the response from the church and local authorities remains a pivotal point to watch amid the ongoing backlash.
