Pam Bondi’s confirmation as President Donald Trump’s attorney general marks a moment of triumph for Republicans, overcoming an array of typical leftist opposition. The Senate approved her appointment with a 54 to 46 vote, largely thanks to Republican backing. In a twist that has left many Democrats scratching their heads, Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman decided to support Bondi, defying the party line.
While Fetterman admitted that Bondi wasn’t his top choice for the role, he nevertheless proclaimed her qualifications. It’s quite amusing that the senator finds himself in the awkward position of having to justify his vote by pointing out that Merrick Garland wasn’t exactly a poster child for law and order himself. The irony, of course, is that Garland’s tenure is often viewed through a veil of bias, making the case for any nominee with a solid grasp of constitutional issues ever more enticing.

Critics on the left were quick to express their discontent with Fetterman’s decision. The Senate Judiciary Chairman, Dick Durbin, took to social media to air grievances, lamenting that any attorney general should prioritize the Constitution above political interests. One can’t help but chuckle at the Democrats’ desperation; they’ve spent years crafting a narrative where allegiance to partisan agendas trumps all principles, only to now express shock at a more centrist figure opting for bipartisan support.
The online left was equally aghast, with progressive commentators taking potshots at Fetterman for crossing the aisle. Leftist influencer Dash Dobrofsky branded Bondi an “election denier” and expressed bewilderment at Fetterman’s decision to affirm her nomination. The ensuing backlash from the left has the feeling of a soap opera where the main character suddenly refuses to abide by the script, and observers are left to wonder what the heck is going on.
Fetterman’s alignment with Trump’s agenda isn’t a new development. Earlier this month, he openly supported Trump’s declaration of a state of emergency at the southern border. This positions him as a rare breed within the Democratic Party, one that is willing to acknowledge the reality of border crises over political posturing. Fetterman’s pragmatic stance, particularly on issues that for years have been relegated to empty rhetoric, may just be the wake-up call the Democratic base needs — assuming they choose to listen rather than hurl insults online.
