Pennsylvania’s own Senator John Fetterman, a darling of the Democratic Party, recently engaged in an eyebrow-raising dinner with none other than former President Donald Trump. Such an act might just be the political equivalent of wearing white after Labor Day in Democrat circles. It appears that Fetterman, despite his party’s general disdain for Trump, found common ground on some surprising issues—a fact that sent a few party insiders scrambling to dust off their fainting couches.
While Fetterman remained tight-lipped about the specifics of their dinner tête-à-tête, he did indicate they shared the opinion that the southern border deserves some attention. His remarks during an interview with the media showcased a rare moment of agreement. The Senator, who professes to be very much “pro-immigration,” stated the obvious: that securing the border while addressing criminal elements is not only sensible but necessary. Who would have thought it would take a Democrat to recognize that a little law and order goes a long way?

Fetterman co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act, named in memory of a Georgia nursing student tragically murdered by an illegal immigrant. The bill mandates that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has the authority to detain illegal immigrants accused of theft-related crimes. This piece of legislation passed recently, further solidifying the notion that Fetterman understands the gravity of the border crisis, calling it an emergency. Who knew pro-immigration could also involve a sprinkle of common sense?
Despite these moments of agreement with Trump, Fetterman was quick to bat away any speculation that he might be leaning toward the GOP. He reaffirmed his allegiance to the Democratic Party, stating emphatically that he would “remain a Democrat.” It’s almost refreshing to see a politician firmly plant their flag even while tiptoeing into Trump territory. And he certainly made it clear that there are quite a few of Trump’s ideals that don’t jive with him—though how that can be reconciled while negotiating dinner plans is anyone’s guess.
Fetterman’s comments reflect a troubling trend for the left. If one of their own begins to see the merit in securing the border and getting tough on crime, is the party heading for a midlife crisis? One could only wonder how long it will be before progressives play the “he’s no longer one of us” card. Regardless, this might just be a case of Fetterman dipping his toes into bipartisan waters while holding firmly to the life raft of Democratic dogma. In the turbulent seas of American politics, one thing is certain—Fetterman is riding the waves, but his compass is still pointing left.
