The latest uproar over the treatment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) agents has stirred quite the kettle, revealing an astonishing lack of civility in Democratic quarters. One can’t help but notice how quickly the left is to point fingers and hurl accusations at these agents who are simply upholding the law. The derision they face every day is nothing short of appalling. The idea that anyone, let alone lawmakers, would suggest that I.C.E. agents deserve attacks just because they carry out their duties is mind-boggling.
Now, before we get lost in the weeds of liberal dissension, let’s consider the alleged “solution” to narco-terrorism brewing down in Venezuela. With reports indicating that military leaders might be considering strikes against these threats, skeptics declaim with their predictable outrage. How dare the military strategize to protect the homeland, they cry. Yet, one would think that after boats have been used to smuggle all manners of threats into this country, any reasonable person—if there are any left on the other side of the aisle—would acknowledge that action is necessary.
And speaking of needing rational action, what about the calls for civil discourse? There’s a glaring contradiction from those who demand “common decency” yet indulge in diatribes against our officials at every turn. The rhetoric used by some leftists crosses beyond heated political discourse into something far worse—outright incitements and, in some cases, calls for violence. Does anyone remember the days when political disagreement didn’t devolve into schoolyard name-calling and dangerous insinuations?
But of course, it’s not just domestic issues that highlight this hypocrisy. On foreign policy matters, the consistent narrative emerging from some corners seems to be “blame America first.” It’s almost comical how swiftly these critics transform into legal scholars, debating whether President Trump has the authority to protect the United States from these narco-terrorist organizations. Newsflash: the United States has every right—and indeed, a duty—to defend its borders and its citizens from foreign threats.
So, therein lies the perplexing dichotomy. On one hand, the left insists on wearing the halo of peace and tolerance yet spews venom when I.C.E. agents attempt to maintain order. On the other hand, they frown upon decisive actions designed to thwart broader terrorist threats. It’s a wonder how they juggle such conflicting stances without toppling over their own arguments. Perhaps it’s time for them to pause the grandstanding, embrace some traditional civility, and acknowledge that preserving our nation’s safety necessities more than just high-minded rhetoric.
