South Carolina Governor Declares Voter System Secure After Probe

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, a Republican, has expressed his confidence in the state’s voter registration system after allegations were made that agencies tried to register illegal immigrants to vote. The governor had requested an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) after Republican state Rep. Adam Morgan claimed that voter registration forms were repeatedly sent to a noncitizen refugee by the South Carolina Medicaid office.

In response to SLED’s findings, Governor McMaster stated that the investigation had confirmed the integrity of the state’s voter registration system and highlighted that agencies were properly complying with state and federal voter registration laws. He emphasized that no evidence of unlawful activity was found and noted that the citizenship verification policies and procedures being followed by state election officials are designed to prevent non-citizens from becoming eligible to vote.

During the investigation, Rep. William Timmons, also a Republican from South Carolina, criticized Morgan’s allegations, stating that they were an attempt to gain attention for his failing Congressional campaign and resulted in wasted tax dollars and death threats to SC election workers. Morgan, who is challenging Timmons for his House seat, responded by stating that the investigation corroborated the claim that non-citizens were being sent registration forms, as required by federal law.

Morgan’s challenge to Timmons for his House seat centers on the belief that the incumbent has not fought enough for hard-line matters. As chairman of the state Freedom Caucus in South Carolina, Morgan has garnered substantial support from House Freedom Caucus hard-liners seeking to cement their hold on the lower chamber, while Timmons seeks reelection for a fourth term in office.
